IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE
Dear John Deere Customer:
In voluntary cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Deere & Company is recalling certain 4000 Ten Series Compact Utility Tractors (CUT) and 110 Tractor Loader Backhoes (TLB) with Hydrostatic Transmissions.
PROBLEM: An internal failure may occur within the Hydrostatic Transmission (HST). The failure prevents the transmission from returning to neutral after the pedals are released. This can allow unexpected motion or cause the tractor to continue moving.
PRODUCT: John Deere models with HST's in the following serial number ranges.

4210 CUT with HST LV4210H220677 through LV4210H221025
4310 CUT with HST LV4310H232267 through LV4310H233638

WHAT TO DO: Please contact your John Deere Dealer immediately to make arrangements for installation of improved parts. All parts will be installed without cost to you.
Do not drive the tractor until your John Deere Dealer has repaired it. Inform everyone who operates the tractor of the potential danger. If a failure occurs and the tractor continues moving, please follow these steps.
1. Reduce the engine speed by moving the throttle lever to slow.
2. Shut off the tractor by turning the ignition key to off.
Note: This will stop the tractor abruptly.
3. Engage the park brake to prevent movement.
4. Remove the ignition key from the tractor to prevent others from starting the tractor.
5. Inform your John Deere Dealer of the situation.
6. Do not drive the tractor until it has been repaired.
Please insert this letter into your operator's manual.

Please call myself or Ken Bowser (Shop Foreman) and we'll make arrangements with you to have this recall completed. The recall involves replacing the Hydro transmission. ....

On another section of the web site it shows the press release date is 12-19-03 as in last friday.
Also interesting that the 2210, 4010, 4100/4110 and 4115's (all built in Japan)are not included. ....

If you look at the serial number ranges it isn't a whole lot of units per model. 4310 is the highest. Might confirm that the 4310 is there best seller?
I have to wonder what was changed in these units transmisisons that caused the issue? Did they make an engineering change to the transmission and if so why?

My Dealer ordered the recall kit which includes a hydro transmision. They are coming to get my 4410 this Friday. They are telling me about 4 days. I'm trying to work out some issues with my Dealer about this recall.
Service has stated the recall instructs to drain and re-use the hydro fluid in the new transmission. Is this common practice or would others be concerned about this as I am?
After getting the tractor back they say I should service the transmission in 50 hours by changing the filters and fluid. I just did this right before I got this recall. I have asked that the Dealer provide the material for this service.

Sounds like penny wise and pound foolish to me.
In your shoes I might opt to pay for new fresh fluid if I couldn't embarrass the dealer into doing it. ....

This is the exact reason to find a good dealer close by. If you bought your tractor from accross the country, guess who's tractor will be fixed first your's or the guy who bought from this dealer? Also the dealer may offer to do the 50 hour service at no or a reduced cost. Just one more example why it is so important to have a good dealer. ....

I agree that it would be best to change the fuid when changing out the fluid, but Deere's instructions do say to use the old fluid over, but they also recommend using their "oil cart". This special tool is a pump and filter system that is very effective in cleaning up any impurities in the oil. If your dealer does not have this tool, I would definitely use new oil, even if I had to pay for it myself. ....
